Sports Bring Us Together

If you've watched even a few minutes of the World Cup, you've probably noticed that the magic isn't limited to what's happening on the field.

It's in the crowds singing in unison before kickoff (and the shared agreement that Shakira will always be the best and only logical choice to create the World Cup anthem). It's in families draped in their country's colors. It's in strangers hugging after a last-minute goal. It's in children believing—just for a moment—that they're wearing the same jersey as their heroes.

The World Cup reminds us that sport has an incredible ability to connect people.

For a few weeks, rival clubs become teammates. Entire countries rally behind a common purpose. Language barriers disappear. Differences become secondary. Whether you're watching from a packed stadium, a neighborhood pub, or your own living room, you're suddenly part of something much bigger than yourself.

From a mental fitness perspective, that feeling matters.

One of the strongest predictors of resilience isn't talent or confidence—it's connection. Feeling like we belong gives us the courage to take risks, recover from setbacks, and persevere when things get hard. Teams that genuinely feel connected communicate better under pressure, trust one another more deeply, and often perform beyond the sum of their individual talent.

That's why some of our favorite moments in sports happen after the final whistle.

When players exchange jerseys, they're doing more than swapping souvenirs. They're recognizing the shared journey that only another competitor truly understands. After ninety minutes of battling one another, they're acknowledging a deeper truth: we're connected by our love for this game.

That spirit shows up across nearly every sport.

Hockey players line up for the traditional postseason handshake, regardless of the intensity of the series.
Marathon runners cheer strangers across the finish line because they know exactly what it took to get there.
Olympians often trade pins throughout the Olympic Village, creating friendships that span continents.

Baseball players tip their caps to exceptional performances—even by opponents.
College athletes gather at midcourt or midfield for prayer, reflection, or words of encouragement after championship games.
International women's lacrosse players line up across from one another following competition and say a cheer for each other's team, as well as share what they think the other team did well and compliment them on it.
Professional tennis players, despite individual rivalries, embrace at the net and often praise one another's effort during post-match interviews.

These traditions remind us that competition and respect can exist together.

Perhaps that's why the World Cup feels different than any other tournament. Yes, players represent their clubs throughout the year, but representing your country carries a different kind of meaning. You're no longer playing only for yourself or your teammates. You're playing for your family, your community, and generations of supporters who see a piece of themselves in your jersey.

That shared identity creates something powerful.

As athletes, coaches, and parents, it's worth asking ourselves:

How can we create that same sense of belonging every day—not just during the biggest tournaments?

Maybe it's welcoming the newest teammate. Celebrating the player who rarely gets the spotlight. Creating rituals that remind everyone they're part of something bigger than themselves. Or simply remembering that the relationships we build through sport often outlast the wins and losses.

Long after the final score is forgotten, people rarely remember every statistic.

They remember how a team made them feel.

Because at its best, sport doesn't just bring out the best in athletes.

It brings people together.

We are always watching sports and it’s not hard to find examples of moments when mental fitness is on full display. Each month we will feature a story or example of one of these moments.

Not every victory ends with a trophy.

After their World Cup journey came to an end, Jordan's national team quietly cleaned their locker room, left gifts of traditional sweets, and wrote a heartfelt thank-you note to the tournament staff. FIFA later highlighted the gesture as an example of outstanding sportsmanship.

Mental fitness isn't only measured by how we respond after a win. It's revealed in how we carry ourselves after disappointment. Gratitude, respect, and humility don't erase the pain of losing—but they remind us that our character is never determined by the final score.

The strongest teams understand that while results are temporary, the way you make people feel lasts much longer.
